NEW: Statement on Sinema’s Role in Blocking Voting Rights Legislation

“If Sinema continues to support the filibuster and ignore the will of the people of Arizona, we will vote her out in 2024 – and destroying voting rights will forever be part of her legacy.”
Phoenix — Today the U.S. Senate failed to begin debate on the Freedom to Vote Act on a 50-50 party-line vote, due to a Republican filibuster. Despite claiming to support this legislation, Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s continued defense of the filibuster helped ensure that it never had a chance.

In response, The Primary Sinema Project released the following statement:

“Senator Sinema is now complicit in the Republican campaign to destroy the right to vote in America.

“As today’s vote made very clear, the filibuster is the only thing blocking the Freedom to Vote Act from becoming law. Democrats have the votes needed to pass this bill and counter the attack on voting rights, but Sinema continues to stand in the way.”

In addition, Luis Avila, spokesman for the Primary Sinema Project, said:

“Senator Sinema claims to support the freedom to vote, but apparently not enough to actually use her power to protect it. Sinema has called Congressman John Lewis a ‘personal hero,’ yet her support for the filibuster will ensure that a bill that honors his legacy never even gets a debate on the Senate floor.

“If Sinema continues to support the filibuster and ignore the will of the people of Arizona, we will vote her out in 2024 – and destroying voting rights will forever be part of her legacy.”
