WALL STREET JOURNAL: KYRSTEN SINEMA IS PREPARING FOR A 2024 RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN AS AN INDEPENDENT

Today the Wall Street Journal has an exclusive report on Kyrsten Sinema’s 2024 re-election campaign. A slideshow from a recent Sinema staff retreat (most likely stocked with room-temperature water and snacks to keep Kyrsten happy) included a campaign timeline as well as details on communications strategy.

The Replace Sinema PAC released the following statement to splash cold water on Sinema’s plans:

“Sinema’s only path forward is spoiler,” said Sacha Haworth, spokesperson for Replace Sinema. “Arizonans are not going to re-elect a Senator who has consistently done the bidding of corporations and wealthy donors, who treats her official staff like personal assistants, and who gives more of her schedule to the Senate masseuse than she does to concerned constituents.”

Polls have consistently shown Sinema coming in last place in a three-way general election. However, Democrats have reason to be concerned that she will pull enough voters away from the Democrat to hand the seat to Republican candidate like Kari Lake. The Replace Sinema PAC is dedicated to making sure that doesn’t happen.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

“One slide breaks down the timeline through the remainder of 2023, including getting a poll and opposition research done by Sept. 30 and getting in place campaign staff by Dec. 31. Another slide on current communications strategy emphasizes her independent streak in the Senate.”

“People close to Ms. Sinema said she saw a possible path to victory that includes keeping some Democratic voters, but her focus will be on bringing in a significant number of the state’s independent voters and soft Republicans turned off by their party’s rightward swing.”

Sinema notably has a history of putting herself, donors, and lobbyists first and Arizonans last: a 37-page handbook for her Senate staff leaked last year detailed the amount of time she allotts for constituent meetings (3 minutes) versus that for lobbyists (20 minutes), her weekly hour-long appointments with the Senate personal masseuse, and her unwillingness to work past 6:30 pm. The handbook also prompted an ethics complaint filed by 13 advocacy groups for her alleged abuse of staff, including requiring them to do her grocery shopping, make sure she is fed at all times, and fix her internet.

About Replace Sinema: The “Replace Sinema” campaign, a project of Change for Arizona 2024 PAC, was launched in September 2022 as “Primary Sinema” to educate voters about the ways Krysten Sinema has let down Arizonans and caved to special interests. To date, the campaign has raised $1.2 million – including over $600,000 in grassroots donations from everyday Arizonans and Americans across the country who want to replace Kyrsten Sinema with a real Democrat. Now, as Kyrsten Sinema has left the Democratic Party, the group’s effort has shifted toward defeating Sinema in a potential three-way general election and ensuring that Arizonans have a Senator who will put everyday people ahead of corporations and special interests.
